We're continuing to meet our principals in the McDonald County School District during National School Principals Month in October. We sat down with Jeff Hughes, principal at Noel Elementary for a question and answer session to find out a little bit more about him.
Tell us about your career in education. Where did you start? How long have you been in education?
I started as a second-grade teacher at Webster Primary School in Webb City. My first year was 2014. I was assistant principal at Noel last year and principal this year.
What's the best thing about being a principal?
Last year, I spent the majority of my time with behavior management and safety. As a principal, I get to apply more focus to instructional strategies and student growth.
We always think about teachers (and principals) teaching kids, but what have you learned from the kids?
Wow, there are so many things the students have taught me. I believe the most important lesson I have learned from my students is they don't care about what I have to say until they know I care about them.
What is special about your school, Noel Elementary?
There are many special things about Noel. The community that supports our school is special. Our diversity is another thing that is special about Noel. Our Noel staff lives our district mission statement, "Every child, every day, whatever it takes!"
When you think about helping kids learn and grow, what comes to mind?
Engaging lessons that let students love learning.
What is your favorite memory so far about being Principal at Noel Elementary?
The Block Party and our Fall Family Night! Our community put on two great events that brought our families together!
What has impressed you the most about working in the McDonald County School District?
Some places talk about loving students. Our district lives it every day.
What are some of your hobbies?
Sports, riding bikes, and hiking.
Tell us about your family? Spouse, kids, etc.
My wife, Juliana, is a special education teacher in the Joplin school district. She is the Joplin Varsity Girls Swim Coach. We have five kids and nine grandkids.
What's the last non-education-related book you read?
I read "Walk Two Moons" by Sharon Creech.
